Leaving Kauai

We are at Lihue Airport, waiting for our flight to Honolulu and on to Phoenix. I took my first helicopter flight yesterday. It was fun. The NaPali coast is amazing! It has not rained in more than a month in Kauai so the only waterfalls I saw we're Springfed, so I will have to come back to Kauai and take the helicopter tour again some day!

Kauai Quilt Shop Hop!

Took a ride yesterday for a little Kauai quilt shop hop. First stop was Vicky's Fabrics in Kapaa. Small shop with lots of Batiks, Hawaiian, and Asian fabrics. Next stop, Kapaia Stichery in Lihue. Great shop with many beautiful Batiks, and Hawaiian fabrics and gift items. Last night we had dinner at Hanalei Gourmet and then across the street to Tahiti Nui for a MaiTai and local entertainment. So fun. Helicopter ride this afternoon of the NaPali coast!!

Kauai

Good Morning from Kauai. The weather has been fabulous! The scenery is amazing! The chickens are everywhere, but they don't bother us. The flowers are colorful!

Detour!!

Our flight from Phoenix to Hawaii was cancelled yesterday, so we had an extra day there. We went to the Phoenix botanical gardens which was very different from most gardens, as it was filled with Segauro and other cacti. They have an amazing Monarch butterfly exhibit too! Pictures below. We have finally arrived in Hawaii and are waiting for our inter island flight to Kaui. It is absolutely beautiful here. We are sitting in the garden of the airport with the doves. Aloha!

Youth Rally Silent Auction.

I attended my regional WOCN conference Thursday evening through Friday afternoon. It was great. There was a young man, 15 years old, who opened conference with a talk about his experience undergoing ostomy surgery, recovery, and attendance at the Youth Rally Camp in Ohio last year. His speech provided lots of inspiration for the WOCN's in attendance. Not a dry eye in the room.
I donated my Kaffe Snapshot quilt from last springs Stashbuster class. There was a bit of a bidding war which made me quite happy. The money raised is used to send teenage ostomy campers from New England to the youth rally camp each year. Quilt Camp tomorrow!!

Scrappy Bargello

Good Evening, just getting home from PBQG guild meeting. I brought my quilt for Show & Tell. It is a scrappy Bargello from Bonnie Hunters' Quiltville. The guild had a workshop last May with Lynn Godin. It is all Halloween fabric, made with 40 fat quarters. It was really fun to work with the purple and orange and novelty fabrics. I think it is a favorite. The left over fabric was used to make the other Halloween quilt from a prior post.
BOO!

October Quilt Camp!!

It was a great weekend at Quilt Camp at the Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk, Maine with the Proper Bostonians.  We had a small group of fourteen, but that meant lots of room to spread out.  The weather was just right.  I worked on my Rectangle Wrangle, and made 30 plus down blocks, bound my Snap Shot Kaffe from last spring Stashbuster class, and machine quilted a baby quilt for a little boy, who will be named Noah, when he is born in November.  Here it is on my design wall:

Jeanette was working on her rectangle wrangle, and finished a few tops including this beautiful quilt for a baby that she machine quilted.

Here is Patty Bailey with two of her gorgeous paper pieced stars from the Star Crazy BOM from the Quilt show.

Susan Powers with three different projects she worked on.  The Holly Hobby dolls are so cute.

Janet Hanley with an adorable cowboy quilt top!

Lorri Foley with a Christmas quilt top.  Very nice.
Anne O'Connell with Cheese and Crackers.

There were a lot of laughs, love, and support.  Thank you to all my Proper Friends for getting me through a tough milestone.  So hard to believe it has been a year since Ryan left us.

Love,  Mary

Quilt Cam!!

I am at quilt camp in Kennebunk with the Proper Bostonians this weekend.  The weather has been great, but I think we are in for some rain tomorrow.  I have 50+ rectangle wrangle blocks done, and some motion quilting on a baby quilt.  We watched Quilt Cam with Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville.  Check it out!

Staycation Part 2

Last night, I attended a lecture by the colourful designer, Kaffe Fassett at Bentley University in Waltham. He was sponsored by the Fabric Corner and Quilters Connection. He has several new books out including his latest quilting book, Kaffe Quilts Again and an autobiography, dreaming in color. He was introduced by Brandon Mably, who was very funny. They were both wearing shirts made with their own fabrics. Kaffe in a bold stripe, and Brandon in a green polka dot with a purple background. I had a great time with my friends from the Proper Bostonians. I bought a copy of his new quilting book for him to sign (I need another quilting book like I need a hole in my head or more fabric).

Staycation

It was a great week for my staycation. Last Saturday, I met Angela Walters who does beautiful quilting for many modern quilters. She has a great book out now, Free Motion Quilting with Angela Walters and another on the way soon. She was at Quilters Way in Acton for a trunk show which I attended with my friend Lorri. Angela was sweet and funny telling the story of her quilting with many references to her husband Jeremy who was off to see the Red Sox play.
Here we are after her talk.

Tommy's Graduation Quilt

I made my nephew Tommy a quilt for his graduation from Queensbury High School in NY.  He is going off to SUNY at Potsdam this weekend.  He is an awesome soccer player and a great kid.  The quilt pattern is Bricks and Stepping Stones from Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville.  I changed the four patches to plain colored blocks because the quilt looked crazy with all the novelty prints used.  Each novelty print represents the people in his life.  For example, the hockey print is for his brother Shay, the pencils for Max, and the basketballs for Sam.  Good Luck in college Tom.  Love you,  Mary

New Post

I have been neglecting my blog, but read lots of other peoples blog.  Because I have my first follower, I will try to do a post once in awhile.  Last post was 14 months ago.  Here is a picture of my most recent finish:

The pattern is Crossroads from a class at the Button Box in Wellesley with Lynn Godin.  I named the quilt "Crossroads at Sunset."  I have donated the quilt to the "Kristen Orcutt Sunshine Foundation."  Kristen's family has an annual golf tournament in May to raise funds for scholarships for nursing students and nurses.

Here is the label:

OK.  I have to get ready for Saturday quilt camp at St. Theresa's with the Proper Bostonians.  Have a great day!  Mary
